Car Free Family

Car Free Family is a blog about my year living without the car with my two young kids. It turned into ten years without a car.

Forget my qualifications, I learnt more about transport by telling our story of experiencing life without a car than through any course or project.

In fact I learnt 10 Golden Lessons to help transport people enable other car free families:

  1. Car Club W*nk*r: be careful in segmentation and labelling
  2. Make it obvious..in black and white: provide feedback on the benefits (which will be different to what you think)
  3. The Cassidy’s house moves: tap into life events
  4. My Mum: love is experience shared: start young to create a mobility culture
  5. Shoe Culling Principle: change the context and get creative
  6. I have become a car salesman: service relationships create new opportunities
  7. Tales of the Unexpected and Jam Tarts: really seek to understand the indirect benefits
  8. Loss and Gain: why Abba got it wrong: consider cognitive biases in messaging
  9. Lesson 1 is wrong: tap into the (often rapidly) changing attitudinal and cultural trends
  10. Let it snow let it snow let it snow: understand longer term generational trends

PS: I do now own a car.  The life event which triggered this?  Moving to the Scottish Highlands.
